Mission Improbable: A Chinese House Church Leader Responds to American Bible Smugglers
Saturday, 1 March 2003
Editor's note: The September 11, 2000 issue of Time magazine carried an article entitled, "When the Smugglers are Working for Jesus." The article profiled the actions of a group of American Bible smugglers to China whose tactic is to saturate a locality with the Scriptures as a means of direct evangelism. Since this is the Internet age, the text of the Time article was soon circulating in China. A 32-year-old house church evangelist in Hanzhou, Zhejiang province, contacted Alex Buchan, Compass Direct Asia Bureau Chief, to offer comment. This commentary (originally published as "Jesus is Not a Book" in Compass, September 22, 2000) is reproduced here and used with permission.
I must be careful not to malign these dear Christian brothers and sisters, and first of all, commend their zeal. We are touched by their concern for the gospel to be spread throughout China. Would that there were many more Christians like them throughout the world with the same ambition.
