What does a Christian university have to say about global suffering? Our vision at Seattle Pacific University, where I serve as president, is to engage the culture and change the world. This is our mission, our clear purpose, and we seek in every way possible to continue to sharpen this mandate for our university. We do this because we believe there can be no circling of the wagons for Christians, no protection from the harsh realities of our world, no shielding our eyes or hearts from the searing circumstances of those who suffer every day. We must be engaged. And out of that engagement we must craft a vision of hope—even against the odds.
