Can the Vital Center Hold?: A Critique of the Evangelical Pacifist Left

In one of the more important of the many post-election "what-went-wrong" articles by Democrats, Peter Beinart, editor of the liberal magazine The New Republic, issued a challenge to his colleagues to come to grips with certain increasingly pernicious elements in the Democratic Party. He fears that unless confronted directly, these elements could result in the long-term marginalization of both liberalism and the Democratic Party. In this essay, I want to suggest that responsible evangelicals, at least those interested in the broader issues of faith and international affairs, could well take a cue from Beinart.
