Turkey Between Secularism and Fundamentalism?: The "Muslimhood Model" and the Greek Orthodox Minority

The December 2004 decision of the European Union (EU) leadership to extend to Turkey a conditional start-date of October 2005 for membership accession talks underscored what is one of the most urgent challenges in contemporary international relations. Specifically, the European Commission emphasized that the negotiation start-date, as well as the final outcome of the negotiation trajectory, will depend significantly on Ankara's willingness and capability to improve Turkey's deficit of democracy—a problem aggravated by ongoing weaknesses in the country's human rights record and, especially, by violations of the freedom of religion.
