“Prophetic” NGO-Government Relationships: What Would Daniel Do?

Multilateral agencies and governments around the world have increasingly acknowledged the crucial role of civil society organizations in facilitating just economic and social development and addressing the needs of the world's most vulnerable people. One need only observe the aid flowing to the victims of the recent tsunami in the Indian Ocean to see that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) stand tall alongside governments and multilateral agencies as significant contributors in places of human need. This being the case, it is surprising that NGOs so frequently seem to be at odds with governments and multilateral institutions.
