Bullets ricocheted around me—far too close. My next recollection was lying nose down against a concrete walk, trying to have a profile no larger than the curb next to me. It was Beirut, 1975, the opening of that country's civil war. I should have been terrified; but, as I lay there, I felt an overwhelming calmness. I felt God's words, "You are right where I want you."
The next week was life on the edge. I was asked to help evacuate the students and the families of Foreign Service Officers who were in Beirut to study Arabic. As I moved around town, it was a miracle that I survived unscathed. Working without sleep or food for several days, I was certain that it was God with me that gave me strength and protection. I was where he wanted me to be.
