Americans are a people taught not to speak of two things in polite company: religion and politics. Yet we now live in a time when our national security exists at their intersection, as the August terrorist plot to blow up airliners reminded us yet again. Jon Meacham presents his book, American Gospel, as a "back to the future" perspective through which Americans can remember how to respectfully talk about religion and politics—for the sake of our society, and our security. What Meacham really offers, however, despite the book's title, is a timely essay on the establishment and stewardship of religious freedom in America.
