If the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 marked the end of the Cold War, already by 1991 it was clear the world had entered a new era in international affairs distinguished by ethnic and religious warfare, humanitarian intervention, and new demands on international organizations. But not only that. The year 1991 also marked the beginning of a period of novel departures in Vatican diplomacy, deepening and broadening prior trends in the Catholic Church's teaching on war and peace.
