The release of our statement, "An Evangelical Declaration Against Torture: Protecting Human Rights in an Age of Terror," garnered considerable attention in mid-March. However, surprisingly little of that attention went to themes that I think constitute the real significance of the document. I am grateful to the editors for a few pages to offer my own take, as lead drafter, on the meaning of this declaration.
