Religion and Torture: A View from the Polls

In response to the national security policies of the Bush administration, leaders and activists in the major religious traditions in the United States have recently spoken out against the use of torture as a tactic in fighting terrorism. Mainline Protestants and Catholics supported the "National Religious Campaign Against Torture" as well as the "No2Torture"campaign in 2006, and the National Association of Evangelicals issued its own "declaration against torture" in 2007. The question of torture has produced remarkable agreement among the largest Christian organizations which often disagree on other issues. As one activist remarked: "A Christian cannot justify the torture of a human being."
