Under the rubric of the rule of law, many contemporary societies are reforming existing institutions and creating new ones in order to grapple with globalization. Most often, such efforts to implement the rule of law focus on economics—investment, trade, contract enforcement, transparency, and so on. But what has become increasingly clear, both in advanced industrial societies and societies in various stages of transition, is that sustainable economic development cannot be divorced from sustainable social development.
