From the Editor: Evangelical Politics of the Middle East

Vol. 5, No. 4 (Winter 2007)

As is often noted in the media, pro-Israel sentiments run stronger in the evangelical community than in most other religious traditions in the U.S. Indeed, the only religious group in America in which pro-Israel attitudes are more prevalent is the Jewish community. A 2004 survey conducted by the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life asked respondents, "Should the U.S. support Israel over the Palestinians?" In descending order, the percentage replying "yes" in each major religious group was:

 Jews      75%
 White evangelicals     52%
 Latino Protestants    37%
 Mainline Protestants   33%
 Non-Latino Catholics  31%
 Latino Catholics      25%
 Black Protestants     24%
 Other Faiths 22%
