African-Americans and Middle East Bridges

Americans often display a troublingly limited understanding of Islamic and Middle Eastern history, culture, and worldviews. And although the African American experience has differed in important ways from the experience of other Americans, my guess would be that many Muslims around the world, and particularly Muslims from the Middle East, brand African Americans as simply "American" in some of the problematic ways Americanism has come to be viewed. These realities have impacted the context of my ministry in higher education and in parish and community life. Consequently, my leadership has been concerned with promoting cross-cultural and religious understanding and tolerance.
