International Religious Freedom Policy: Taking Stock

The promotion of religious freedom is a "core objective" of U.S. foreign policy. This is the language U.S. officials employ to describe the mandate of the 1998 International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA). One of the most sweeping human rights statutes on the books, it created new institutions and processes that insure a permanent presence for the cause of religious liberty in America's foreign policy architecture.
