Engaging Communist East Asia: Recommendations for Religious Freedom

Due to their divergence in histories and governing ideologies, it is easy to be skeptical about the possibility of finding common ground between the U.S. and Communist East Asia (CEA) regarding religious freedom. Is it really possible for "communists" and "capitalists" to come to a shared understanding of religious freedom as a universal value? Both "sides" understand freedom and sovereignty in different historical contexts. For example, it is impossible to understand America's freedom apart from its original freedom from organized state religion. Similarly, it is impossible to understand freedom in CEA apart from its original freedom from the legacy of foreign invasion—European, American, and other Asian nations.
