South and Central Asia have never before assumed so pivotal a role for an incoming American president. This region includes the site of America's most challenging military engagement; the major safe haven from which al-Qaeda is planning attacks on the United States and its allies; two mutually antagonistic nuclear states, one of which has been involved in nuclear proliferation; and a rapidly rising geo-economic power. At the same time, South and Central Asia is also one of the most religiously diverse regions of the world.
