There has been a surge in immigration in recent years, a surge dominated by Latin American, and more precisely Mexican, migration—much of it undocumented. Approximately 78 percent of the 12 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S. are Hispanic. Of these, 6.2 million are Mexican and 2.5 million are from other parts of Latin America, mostly Central America. It is estimated that from 2000–2004, each year approximately 90,000 Mexican immigrants entered the U.S. legally, while 485,000 did so illegally.
