In early 2005, I served briefly as an interpreter for foreign aid workers in the tsunami-stricken province of Aceh, Indonesia. While there, I served with members of an Indonesian Christian foundation who were assisting tsunami victims to reconstruct their means of livelihood in salt farming and fishing, as well as organizing children's education and health programs in the community. Their plan was to establish a long-term presence for God's kingdom in that community, based on respectful relationships and sensitivity to the local culture and situation.
