Conversion, Witness, Solidarity, Dialogue: Modes of the Evangelizing Church in Tension

The complex challenge of modern evangelism in a pluralist world has been a source of dynamism and division in all Christian traditions. In the Catholic tradition, for instance, a sea-change has occurred in understandings of Jesus' Great Commission (Matthew 28:19-20) to "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations." Over the past 50 years, Catholics have journeyed from a focus on "conversion" of the lost to "solidarity" with non-Christians and non-theists; from "missionaries" saving souls to "missioners" content to give witness through service.
