Shortly after Nigerian independence in 1960, Sir Ahmadu Bello, the first Premier of Northern Nigeria, articulated a memorable call for unity: "Let us forget our differences ... No! Let us understand our differences. I am a Muslim and a Northerner. You are a Christian and an Easterner. By understanding our differences, we can build unity in our country." This call would be answered in a profound way in the late 1990s, when a pastor and an imam in Kaduna chose not only to identify difference, but to understand it so they could pursue peace together.
