U.S. military chaplains and chaplain assistants have engaged persons of diverse faith groups in various ways during the course of American history. In the early period, Christian clergy and missionaries were primarily interested in converting people of other faiths to Christianity. However, as the United States and its military became more pluralistic and more engaged in conflicts around the world, a broader mission to win the hearts and minds of the people in the area of operations became more urgent.
