Literature on democratization in the Middle East abounds, but very few works have focused on nonviolent civil resistance as a crucial element in the process. Civilian Jihad helps correct this imbalance by providing a useful introduction to prevalent theory on civil resistance and combining it with case studies of "people power" in the greater Middle East. It includes 19 studies on the theory and use of nonviolent civil resistance in a region of the world more frequently associated with armed insurgency, terrorism, and violent jihad.
