How American Jews Can Embrace the Cause of Palestinian Human Dignity

Vol. 8, No. 3 (Fall 2010)

A popular narrative in the United States holds that there exist two sides to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. On one side you have Jews in Israel who historically suffered at the hands of oppressors, i.e., Russian pogroms and the Nazi Holocaust, and are now surrounded by hostile regimes in the land of their biblical heritage. On the other side you have Palestinians who either support Hamas, designated as a terrorist organization by the US government, or Fatah, a fatally flawed and corrupt political organization. The story continues that recent attempts to create the conditions for a Palestinian homeland have failed solely because of the violent tactics of Hamas and the corrupt and incompetent policies of Fatah. Hence this narrative typically concludes that it is ultimately the flawed character of the Palestinian people themselves that is really to blame for perpetuating the conflict.
