Work and Love in the Global Village: Responding to Caritas in Veritate

Labor and its associations has long been close to the heart of the Catholic Church, ever since Pope John II inspired the solidarity movements in Poland with his historic commitments to social justice, the dignity of work, and the rights of human beings. True to form, in Caritas in Veritate Benedict affirms the dignity of work and unions—but he also calls for new perspectives on unionism within an era of hyper-globalism. It is a call that could not be more urgent. Let me offer some immediate challenges to labor unionism in North America, and suggest three ways Benedict's encyclical can inspire some much needed creative intervention in the world of labor.
